Kauai Day 4

We are all starting to adjust to Hawaii time as everyone is sleeping a little later each day. We didn't really have any set plans for today, so we went swimming in the pool of course. We seem to start each day off that way, despite any adventures we have planned. It's really the perfect way to start any day, I think. After lunch (grilled cheese and toasted tomato sandwiches and fresh fruit salad and chips and hummus) we drove out to Spouting Horn. On the way we stopped along the road at Beach House beach because we heard this was a good spot to see turtles, and we wanted to check it out. Imagine our surprise when we saw one floating in the surf really close to shore! We wanted to put our snorkel gear on right then and jump in with our clothes on, but we settled for watching it for a long time and deciding right then and there that we would come back tomorrow morning and snorkel and play. There is very little shade on this beach, so we want to go early to try and avoid any more pink skin! We continued on to Spouting Horn and watched the surf come up through the blow hole a few times. The kids (and I) like Spouting Horn because there are little shops set up there that sell trinkets. The kids all get to pick something. This year, the boys chose cloth geckos filled with sand from Kauai beaches and Taylor picked a pretty anklet with turtles and flowers. I got a gecko, too. Andrew named his gecko Luigi and Nathan named his Tofu. I named mine Mahi Mahi (the actual fish not my gecko). So fun. On our way back, our suburban stopped in Koloa for shave ice! (I forgot to mention last night we went down to the beach and had our first shave ice - I had a scoop of vanilla macadamia nut ice cream on the bottom with watermelon, pineapple and honeydew shave ice). Today's shave ice experience was a shark bite! It had a scoop of chocolate macadamia ice cream on the bottom and strawberry and coconut shave ice with a drizzle of cream (the snow cap) over top. It was really good. I think I might even prefer the chocolate ice cream over the vanilla! Once back at home base, Taylor, Mike and I went back in the pool. We meant to go to Merriman's for dinner, but turned off the road too early, so we ended up at Poipu Tropical Burgers. It was really good. mostly everyone had burgers, but Nathan and I had mahi mahi. After supper we had a dance party on the lawn and then it was off to bed. Mom comes to join us tomorrow and we are trying to find a theatre in Lihue that is showing the last Harry Potter. Hmmm....I think I might dream about turtles, though. I can hardly wait to go snorkelling in the morning. Good night, Kauai!
